353 practice questions: task 2 (Ac+GT essays)
IELTS writing
This page contains essay questions from official IELTS books (with the link to Amazon and page number). The module (Academic or General Training) is marked for each question (there are more Academic topics here and in many books) but the essay structure, themes, types and requirements are essentially the same, so you can use any topic to practice, no matter which module you are taking.
Real test questions are developed by IELTS writers and, therefore, unique, so it's not a good idea to learn topics by heart. However, I recommend exploring a range of topics by reading articles and watching documentaries about them: expanding your awareness of the world issues will help you not only with the essay writing but with the speaking as well.
While your answer must be original (not plagiarised, or copied), it doesn't have to be particularly creative, unusual or express an expert opinion. Instead, concentrate on giving a relevant answer to the question and expressing your ideas clearly and logically, supporting them with reasons and examples.
Before you start writing, always make an outline of the main arguments and supporting ideas: this way, in the middle of writing, you won't waste time trying to think of ideas or go off topic. Even the most experienced writers need a plan when there is time for only one draft: the final.
SOME COMMON ESSAY QUESTIONS ARE:
Do you agree (or disagree)? To what extent do you agree? What is your opinion? Do you think...?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of this? Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? Are the benefits of this greater than the drawbacks?
What causes this? Why is this happening?/ What are the consequences? Why is this a problem?/ How can this be solved? How can this be made better?
Discuss both views/ this view (and give your own opinion).
Other questions: What is happiness? Who should teach children responsibility? What communication skills are important in the modern world? etc. etc. This is a pretty uncommon type of essay question, but it is good practice because it makes you think carefully about what your task actually is.
